About the art of Hans-Peter Wandelt
Hans Peter Wandelt on his Cologne paintings on canvas:
"My training back then was fortunately still of a classical nature... For me, that means painting is, quite simply, about painting itself. What interests me most as a kind of ’message’ is the theme of light. Without light, there is nothing.
You can’t look at an apple without light in fact, the apple doesn’t even exist, even if our cognitive mind insists: ’There is an apple.’ That may be objectively correct and yet, the apple is not there.
When designing and building houses and spaces, light played an essential role for me. I first discovered light as a theme during my art studies through the works of artists from the ‘Golden Age’ (Vermeer, Rembrandt, and many others). But back then, it was always a very theoretical engagement with the subject.
Only through building did I gain the physical experience of light in space."
