Hanging paintings on canvas easily and securely

How to hang paintings: How to hang your paintings, pictures, and works of art quickly, easily, and securely. In this video, we show you how to easily attach a smart hanging system to your works of art for your next art exhibition, so that you can align all the works of art in the exhibition at the same height. The hanging system is primarily suitable for paintings on canvas.

Hanging paintings List of materials: What do we need for a swing suspension?

  • Cordless
  • screwdriver
  • 2 screws per picture Picture
  • wire Foam
  • Protractor Textile
  • adhesive tape
  • Stapler
  • Huckies
  • Drill
  • Dowel
  • Screw Whitewashed
  • cover cap
  • Cordless screwdriver

Attaching the swing suspension

Once you have all the materials you need to hang your painting, you can start attaching the swing hanger to your picture. It is best to lay the picture flat on a straight surface with the painted side facing down. The top of the artwork should be facing you, just as the artwork will be hung later. After all, you don't want the artwork to hang upside down. Using the protractor, measure 15 cm from the top edge of the frame, on both the left and right sides of the frame. You can mark the point in advance with a pencil. Then lightly screw in a screw on each side at the marked point – but don't tighten it completely yet. Now wrap the picture wire around the screw on both sides. But first, check that the distance between the wire and the frame is correct. This should be the same for all the artworks in your exhibition. We always choose a distance of 6 cm between the wire and the top edge of the frame. Pull the wire taut and measure the distance between the wire and the top edge of the frame. If it is 6 cm, you can finally tighten the screws; otherwise, loosen the wire from the screws again, adjust and measure again until the distance is correct. Tip: Mark the cm measurements on your protractor. This makes the whole process much faster, for example, with a small piece of tape at 15 cm and another at 6 cm.

Apply textile adhesive tape for protection and to create spacers

To prevent the wire from coming loose again and to keep the wall clean when hanging the painting, we now stick a small piece of fabric tape over the screw and wire. The swing hanger should now be in place. To ensure proper ventilation of the artwork on the wall and to protect the wall from dirt, we now attach small spacers. The foam required for this can be purchased by the meter at a hardware store, for example. First, cut strips and then small rectangles from the meter-long piece with scissors. Then fold each small rectangle once and attach them with two staples in each of the four corners of the artwork. Et voilà... the first artwork is ready to be hung.

Preparing the hanging wire

  • For the hanging wire, you will need:
  • Picture wire
  • Press clamps
  • Crimping pliers
  • Huckies (you can order these from our shop at www.littlevangogh.de)

Now you need to prepare the hanging wire: For this, we need picture wire and a Huckie per picture, as well as press clamps and appropriate crimping pliers. The length of the wire depends on the ceiling height. For a normal ceiling height, we use a wire that is 1.40 m long. For very high ceilings, a length of 1.60 m may be required. First, form a loop at the upper end and clamp the crimp clamp in place with the crimping pliers. The loop must be large enough that you can just fit it around a screw. At the lower end, insert the wire into the Huckies. Now you can adjust the height of the Huckie as desired and lock it at the appropriate height by turning the wheel. This allows you to hang your painting at the correct height.

Attaching the wire to the wall

Den so eben präparierten Galeriedraht könnt Ihr nun entweder in den Haken einer Galerieschiene einhängen, insofern bereits eine Galerieschiene vorhanden ist oder ihr befestigt den Drahtmittels

Use the drill to make a hole just below the ceiling (8 mm drill bit) and insert a suitable dowel (8 mm) into the hole. Then use a cordless screwdriver to lightly tighten the screw. Hook the loop of the gallery wire around the screw and then tighten the screw with the cordless screwdriver. Now place the matching white cover cap on the screw. This makes the screw less noticeable. Now your wire is ready to hang. You can now hook your picture onto your Huckie at the desired height and align it so that it hangs straight. We recommend locking the Huckie at a height of 1.95 cm from the floor using a folding rule. This ensures that the artwork hangs at eye level. If you do the same for your other artworks, you can quickly and easily hang several pictures aligned at the top edge. Thanks to the height-adjustable Huckies, the hanging system can be adapted to different formats and adjusted again and again to suit the respective picture.
