About the art of Monique Cognet
Her encounter with the Provençal lands was a lightning strike. Perhaps it is the unconscious memory of her maternal origins that can be seen in this. Absorbing it, feeling it, and expressing it in her painting became an obvious necessity. The olive trees, symbols of life, and the powerful contrasts of light that sculpt the Alpilles as well as the garrigue, moved her deeply. It is through the strength of gesture applied with her knives, tempered by the smoothness of pigments mixed with oil, that she attempts to convey the emotion felt in her communion with these places, all while being rocked by the song of the cicadas.
