Biography of Gilles Maes

Born in 1954 as the son of one of the most renowned portrait photographers of the 1940s and 1950s and a mother who also gained recognition as a photographer and painter, Gilles Maes was immersed in a world of artistry from an early age. Growing up in the family studio, young Gilles witnessed the creation of portraits for numerous famous personalities, including film actors, singers, and writers who visited Brussels during that era.

It is impossible for painter Gilles Maes to deny his heritage: he is deeply fascinated by the world of yesterday’s and today’s stars. His painted portraits are striking, particularly for their ability to capture the essence and hidden nature of his subjects.
